As part of 2022’s May Mental Health Awareness Month, organizations from MTV to the US government are sponsoring initiatives to promote awareness, education, and action related to mental health.
MTVs involvement comes at a time when the incidence of mental health issues among young adults is rising significantly, according to data compiled from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates. According to SAMHSA, almost one in three young adults aged 18-25 reported having mental health issues in 2020, the most recent survey data available. Since 2014, the percent of young adults reporting issues has grown much faster than that of older demographic groups.
SAMHSA’s website contains a wealth of information related to Mental Health awareness, including a schedule of events sponsored by various US government agencies to promote awareness in May and a video Message from the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, Miriam E. Delphin-Rittmon, Ph.D.
The National Alliance for Mental Health has chosen the theme of “Together for Mental Health” to promote Mental Health Awareness during May. According to NAMI, “We will use this time to bring our voices together to advocate for mental health and access to care through NAMI’s blog, personal stories, videos, digital toolkits, social media engagements and national events.” NAMI’s website features resources and a list of events for the month.
The National Council on Mental Wellbeing’s website offers a list of resources and initiatives for Mental Health Awareness Month, including information on their upcoming annual Hill Day virtual advocacy event to advocate for critical mental health policies in Congress.
There are many websites and numbers available 24/7 for people to reach out if they are struggling with mental health and/or if they are in crisis. You can see an extensive list of crisis hotlines on the American Psychological Association’s site or visit the Suicide Prevention Lifeline website for more information.
