An Intelligent Look at AI in Behavioral Health | Part 1

Blog

Since ChatGPT became publicly available in late 2022, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has garnered much attention—and hype. Streamline Healthcare Solutions recently conducted a webinar exploring what AI is—and what it is not—and several real-world applications for AI in Behavioral Health today.

Artificial Intelligence vs Augmented Intelligence

According to McKinsey & Company’s definition, Artificial Intelligence, or AI, “is a machine’s ability to perform the cognitive functions we associate with human minds, such as perceiving, reasoning, learning, interacting with an environment, problem-solving, and even exercising creativity.”

Common types of AI models include the following:

  • Machine Learning. Designed to generalize patterns and relationships in data and make predictions and recommendations without being explicitly programmed.
  • Deep Learning (Neural Networks). Inspired by the structure of the human brain. Designed to process and analyze larger volumes of more complex data, including image and speech recognition.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP). Designed for computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language.
  • Computer Vision. Designed to enable computers to interpret and understand visual information from the world.

An important subset of AI is Augmented Intelligence. According to the American Medical Association, Augmented Intelligence is “a conceptualization of artificial intelligence that focuses on AI’s assistive role, emphasizing that its design enhances human intelligence rather than replaces it.”

Augmented Intelligence in Behavioral Health

The concept of Augmented Intelligence is key in Behavioral Health. AI models can quickly process, analyze, and spot relationships in the large amount of data generated by Behavioral Health organizations. These analyses can then be leveraged to enhance the ability of human clinicians to provide care more efficiently and effectively than otherwise possible.

In particular, Streamline is collaborating with two organizations to implement AI via its SmartCare™ Behavioral Health Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform.

Holmusk

Streamline is partnering with Holmusk, a leading global behavioral health real-world evidence company, to introduce the firm’s Management and Supervision Tool (MaST) to the U.S. market.

MaST uses predictive analytics to help healthcare professionals make decisions, including prioritizing individuals at risk of a mental health crisis. The tool quickly identifies clinically relevant information within patient electronic health records faster than the human eye. This enables Behavioral Health organizations to, among other things, more quickly identify and help individuals who are likely to need crisis services and to better manage clinician caseloads.

Eleos Health

Streamline is collaborating with Eleos Health CareOps Automation to turn behavioral health conversations into documentation and intelligence that drives better care. Leveraging specialized clinical augmented intelligence models to accurately interpret, analyze and document behavioral health conversations, Eleos Health automatically generates 70% of required documentation, reducing admin work by 50% while unlocking objective insights into evidence-based care.
